Glen Iris Elementary School turned 100 on June 3, 2023, and the school invited the entire community to celebrate a century of excellence with a program and festival. Several Glen Iris alumni and staff members returned for the event.
Food trucks offering everything from tamales to chicken wings filled the school’s parking lot. There was music, face-painting and lots of activities for children. Before the start of the festival the school hosted a reception and program for the alums and the Glen Iris community. .
Glen Iris was built in 1923 in Southside. Initially, it offered elementary, middle school and high school grades, until 1939 when Ramsay High School was built. The school located at 1115 -- 11th Street South, included grades K-8, before it became an elementary school in 1989.
The school offers pre-kindergarten through 5th grade and currently is led by Principal Tronci Southall-Mason. Glen Iris has a diverse international population with students from 14 different countries. The staff embraces diversity and focuses on excellence for all scholars
